Social networking giant Facebook has announced it now has one million active advertisers globally, who have advertised on the site for the last four weeks.

The company said the milestone was achieved with the help of small businesses, who promote their brand and products on the site.

Facebook director of small business, Dan Levy, said: "I know business owners like these invest their hard earned money and time into running their companies.

"So today, on behalf of everyone at Facebook, I want to say thank you to them and to the more than one million businesses like them who are active advertisers," Levy said.

"Most small business owners start off as Facebook users, then migrate to become page owners, and from there migrate to become advertisers."

Facebook, which crossed one billion mark last year, has reported a 38% rise in its year on year revenue to $1.45bn for the first quarter of 2013 boosted by new advertising products.

Revenue from advertising grew 43% to $1.25bn in Q1 and mobile advertising revenue represented about 30% of advertising revenue.

According to a report from eMarketer, Facebook is expected to register 333% increase in the mobile ad revenues to more than $2bn in 2013, accounting for a 12.9% market share of the global net mobile advertising market.
