Israeli PM accuses Iran of escalating cyber attacks

He said his country's ‘essential systems’ were being targeted by Iran

By CBR Staff Writer

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu accused Iran of escalating cyber attacks against his country.

Netanyahu said that Israel’s ‘essential systems’ were being targeted by Iran, along with its Palestinian and Lebanese allies.

The water system, electric grid, trains and banks were targets of the attacks, he added.

Speaking at a conference on cyber warfare in Tel Aviv, Netanyahu said Israel identified a noticeable increase in the cyber attacks in the last few months.

Netanyahu was quoted by Reuters as saying, "Despite the non-stop attacks on us, you hear only about a few of them because we thwart most of them."

A national cyber directorate, which was established by Netanyahu in 2011, was given the charge of protecting Israel’s computer systems from being subject to disruptions.

It is alleged that in recent years Israel and the US are behind a string of cyber attacks against an Iranian nuclear programme, which the two allies claim is responsible for developing atomic weapons.

Iran, on the other hand, refutes these allegations, saying that its nuclear activities are peaceful.

Israel said it endured a pro-Palestinian cyber attack against its government websites two months ago.

Although these attacks disrupted several sites briefly, security protocols were updated in response.
