The Guardian has become latest victim of group of hackers, known as the Syrian Electronic Army (SEA), which hijacked the news paper’s Twitter accounts.

The Guardian said it first came to know that it was being targeted over the weekend when spoof emails were sent to staff encouraging them to click on links that could compromise some of the company’s email and social media accounts.

According to Guardian, several of its Twitter feeds including GuardianBooks, GuardianTravel and guardianfilm were affected.

A spokesperson for Guardian News & Media said: "We are aware that a number of Guardian Twitter accounts have been compromised and we are working actively to resolve this."

The SEA, which is reportedly believed to be sponsored by the Syrian government, has launched hacking attacks on several media outlets in recent months apart from hijacking the Facebook page of US President Barack Obama.

Last month, the SEA hacked a number of BBC Twitter accounts and posted fake tweets regarding the conflict in Syria.

Earlier this month, the group also hacked CBS News Twitter accounts and used them to tweet messages that criticised US support for terrorist rebels in Syria.
