Microsoft has reported revenue of $20.49bn for the third quarter of 2013, compared to $17.4bn it reported during the same period in 2012.

For the third quarter, the company’s net income increased to $6.06bn, or $0.72 diluted earnings per share, compared to $5.1bn, or $0.60 diluted earnings per share, it reported during the same period in the corresponding period.

Operating income rose to $7.61bn, compared to $6.37bn for the same period last year.

The company’s Windows division posted a 23% rise in revenue to $5.7bn for the quarter and the Server & Tools business revenue grew 11% to $5.04bn.

Microsoft’s Business Division revenue grew 8% to $6.32bn and revenue from Entertainment and Devices increased 56% to $2.53bn.

The Online Services Division reported revenue increased 18% to $832m and online advertising revenue grew 22% driven by an increase in revenue per search.

Microsoft chief executive officer Steve Ballmer said: "The bold bets we made on cloud services are paying off as people increasingly choose Microsoft services including Office 365, Windows Azure, Xbox LIVE, and Skype."

The company said adjusting for the European Commission fine, it is revising operating expense guidance downward and now offers a range of $30.2bn to $30.5bn for the full year ending 30 June 2013.

Microsoft said that its CFO Peter Klein will leave the company at the end of the current fiscal year and it will appoint a new CFO from its finance leadership team in the next several weeks.
