British hacker Ryan Ackroyd has admitted being part of hacking group LulzSec and pleaded guilty to cyber attacks targeting Sony, Nintendo, News International and the Arizona State Police.
Ackroyd has pleaded guilty to one charge out of four charges he faced for carrying out an illegal act to harm the operation of a computer, contravening the Criminal Law Act 1977.
Three other hackers including Mustafa Al-Bassam, Jake Davis and Ryan Cleary will also face similar charges and be sentenced on 14 May 2013.
According to reports, Ackroyd is expected to face a maximum jail term of 10 years.
As part of the attacks, the group’s members used techniques that flooded websites with high traffic, dubbed DDoS attacks, in a bid to put them out of order.
The hacking group is also alleged to have hacked the website of the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).
However, Ackroyd denied taking part in the DDoS attacks. However he admitted, as did the three others, to hacking into computer systems, acquiring confidential data and redirecting legal website visitors to sites that were hosted by the hackers.
