Google will assemble its internet-connected eyewear at Foxconn’s facility located in Santa Clara, California, US.
The ‘sci-fi-like’ headset is an Android powered device similar to a smartphone that operates on voice commands, while a small screen above the user’s right eye will display search results and other data.
The hands-free ‘Project Glass’ will capture images and record video, as well as share content directly through email or social networks via a smartphone.
Google is planning to manufacture only a few thousand Google Glass devices at the Californian factory line, according to the FT.
The local production of the device would enable Google engineers to be closely involved with the production process and offer more opportunities for final fixes.
Additionally, Google has launched the trial of Google Glass to creative individuals and developers, allowing themto explore ways of using the new headset.
Google is also planning to offer prototypes to 8,000 people for £1,000 during the following weeks, while general sales are expected to commence by the end of 2013.
