Wal-Mart Stores is planning offer a locker service to store online purchases, in order to compete with Amazon.

The locker service is part of Wal-Mart’s plan to combine its brick-and-mortar retail expertise with online and mobile technology.

Walmart Global president and chief executive of eCommerce Neil Ashe said, "We are absolutely tenacious about building best-in-class e-commerce. But we are the only ones who can marry that with the largest retailer in the world."

Walmart.com chief executive officer in the US Joel Anderson was quoted by Bloomberg as saying that Wal-Mart has started shipping items from some US stores directly to consumers, and plans to double the locations participating in that test to about 50.

Currently, Amazon is installing lockers in brick-and-mortar stores in order to help its customers pick up online orders.
