Google’s Motorola Mobility is planning to lay off 1,200 of its employees or more than 10% of its workforce in an effort to increase profitability.
The company has informed its employees about the latest cuts, which arrive on top of 4,000 layoffs revealed in August 2012, as part of the company’s large scale restructuring plan.
According to the Wall Street Journal, Motorola Mobility said: "While we’re very optimistic about the new products in our pipeline, we still face challenges."
"Our costs are too high, we’re operating in markets where we’re not competitive and we’re losing money," the company added.
The layoffs will affect employees working at the company’s offices in the US, China and India.
Google acquired the Motorola unit for $12.5bn in May 2012, which manufactures smartphones and other devices and owns 17,000 patents.
Google has shifted several of its executives and product managers to assist in operating Motorola.
