Protecting Children from Internet Predators Act or Bill-C30 was designed to help the country’s police combat child pornography. However the bill received criticism because it would give power to government agencies to freely monitor people’s activities on the interent.
"We will not be proceeding with Bill C-30 and any attempts that we will continue to have to modernize the Criminal Code will not contain the measures contained in C-30, including the warrantless mandatory disclosure of basic subscriber information or the requirement for telecommunications service providers to build intercept capability within their systems," said Canadian Justice Minister, Rob Nicholson.
The proposed bill required the telecommunications service providers (TSPs) to implement and maintain a technical capability to allow lawfully authorised interceptions.
The Canadian government claimed that the Bill C-30 would help to better address cybercrimes committed using modern communication technologies.
According to the government, the proposed legislation would also permit ratification of the Council of Europe Convention on Cybercrime and the Additional Protocol to the Convention on Cybercrime.
