Apple removes 500px photography app over child porn concerns

Apple has asked the app developer to avoid using pornographic images and material in the application.

By CBR Staff Writer

Apple has removed a popular photography app, 500px, from its iOS App Store over concerns of possible child porn.

500px, which had been available since October 2011, carried pornographic material, which was against Apple’s rules.

"The app was removed from the App Store for featuring pornographic images and material, a clear violation of our guidelines," Apple said in a statement.

"We also received customer complaints about possible child pornography."

500px chief operating officer Evgeny Tchebotarev told TechCrunch that the app did feature ‘artistic’ nude images, but said that a ‘safe search’ mode was turned on by default.

"Some people are mature enough to see these photos, but by default it’s safe," Tchebotarev said.

"We don’t allow pornographic images. If something is purely pornographic, it’s against our terms and it’s deleted.

"It’s not about pornography, it’s about fine art."

The app developer has agreed to change the features of the app, however, Google has not pulled the app from its app store and is known for its relatively looser controls on content.
