26% of all UK broadband connections are superfast, with fibre broadband surpassing 1.5 million British premises and on target to reach an additional 40,000 homes and businesses per week.
Broadband speeds have almost quadrupled from 5.2Mbps in May 2010, to 18.7Mbps this May.
UK Culture Secretary Sajid Javid said: "I’m delighted that the project has now reached more than 1.5 million homes and businesses, giving people much faster and reliable connections.
"We know how important superfast broadband is to everyone, which is exactly why we are investing £1.7 billion in this remarkable project."
"Our transformation of the UK’s digital landscape is progressing at an incredible rate and delivering a tremendous boost to the nation’s economy as part of the government’s long term economic plan."
Currently, the Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) rollout covers around 80% of the UK. The BDUK is aiming to reach 95% in the next two years, with 44 projects across the UK comprising the scheme being ahead of schedule.
Furthermore, it is claimed that the UK is already leading the top 5 European economies for broadband coverage, speed, choice and price.
UK Environment Secretary Elizabeth Truss said: Rural Britain is being wired up and fired up as we push superfast broadband into the countryside at an electrifying pace.
"Connecting rural communities is enabling rural businesses to reach their full potential – creating jobs, boosting exports and supercharging our economy."
