Amazon Web Services has been accredited with the ISO 9001 certification, meaning that firms should be feel safer working with sensitive data in Amazon’s cloud.
AWS said: "This certification allows AWS customers to run their quality-controlled IT workloads in the AWS cloud. It signifies that AWS has undergone a systematic, independent examination of our quality system. This quality system was found to have been implemented effectively and has been awarded an ISO 9001 certification as a result.
"We believe that this certification will be of special interest and value to AWS customers in the life sciences and health care industries. Companies of this type (including drug manufacturers, laboratories, and those conducting clinical trials) have an FDA-mandated obligation to operate a Quality Management Program."
The cert, officially called ISO 9001:2008, is a globally recognised products and services management standard, and has eight principles defined by the ISO Technical Committee for quality management and quality assurance. The principles include ‘process approach’, ‘customer focus’, and ‘factual-approach to decision making’.
Of course, one would hope a company storing potentially sensitive and important data would be adhering to these principles already, but EY CertifyPoint, an ISO certifying agent, has deemed AWS worthy of ISO 9001.
