South Korean electronics firm Samsung is planning to commence the mass production of mobile phones that feature plastic displays rather than glass in 2013, which will be lighter, durable and cheaper.

Being developed through the use of a plastic polymer instead of glass, the new displays are claimed to roll and bend, and survive falls and blows from the users.

The displays feature Organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) that are compact and have capability to endure being deployed on elastic materials including plastic and foil.

Samsung has also begun testing the new devices with flexible displays with few customers, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Firms have also been conducting tests of the new technology for potential deployments in digital posters and fabrics with digital displays.

Sony and LG have also developed prototype flexible displays while have not yet managed to edge through mass production of devices to release in the market.
