Lenovo Y50 UHD
Upping its initial offering of a 1080p TN screen on the Y50, Lenovo’s new model features a whopping UHD display at 3840 x 2160.
Some critics argue that a 4K screen is overkill on a 15.6-inch laptop, but it’s undeniable that the screen is glorious, and can easily compete with Apple’s Retina line of Macbooks.
However, there are still some scaling issues with Windows 8 and 4K resolution, with some apps and text scaling too small to be useful or read, but as 4K technology is adopted more in 2015, software updates should smooth matters out.
The Y50 is a gaming laptop at heart, but gaming at 4K with the graphics power in this, a Nvidia GTX860m 2GB card, will likely be impossible with new games as it simply isn’t powerful enough. Saying that, the option to play in 1080p is possible, but the high resolution screen is locked at 48HZ meaning a maximum of 48FPS will be the limit for games.
Toshiba Satellite P50t
Quadruple 1080p with Toshiba’s offering. Less gaming orientated that the Lenovo Y50, the Toshiba Satellite dishes out a solid multimedia experience with high-end components and a touch screen.
In 2014, there is still not a lot of 4K media floating around, but we reckon with these futureproof laptops, you’ll start seeing the benefits of owning a 4K laptop soon enough.
Asus ROG GX500
Another gaming-focused 4K machine, the Asus ROG (Republic of Gamers) GX500 is not out yet but is set to be a killer when it is.
At just 2kg and 0.7-inches thin, this ultra-portable gamer with a 4K IPS display will more than likely blow the competition out of the water. Let’s just wait and see.
Macbook Pro Retina?
Okay, it’s not technically 4K, but as far as Apple is concerned, ‘Retina’ displays are still just as good. Generally perceived to be a marketing term, ‘Retina’ refers to the point at which the human eye cannot distinguish individual pixels. In terms of Macbooks, it’s more like 2K.
Despite that, the 2013 and 2014 models of Apple’s Macbook Pros still have a gorgeous screen and, to the average consumer, looks no different to a 4K screen.
