The CEO of cloud storage vendor Box has said that today’s security challenges mean cloud security has to be reassessed.
The comments came during Aaron Levie’s keynote at Box’s second annual gathering of cloud pros and customers, Business Without Boundaries.
He said: "How do you build a world where you secure your organisation with a perimeter based model? Where all the security [is] built in the networks level and the VPN level, and you keep all your data on premise? That’s not a reality anymore."
Levie said that the disparity between how we work and what traditional enterprise software can solve is at its greatest right now. He referenced a Skyhigh Networks survey which found that, on average, the number of cloud services that are in use in a company between all its different employees is 738. With all of these varied services in use in a BYOD workforce, the approach to perimeter security has to be restructured as the data is moved outside of traditional IT security circles.
Levie said: "The reality is people, every transaction that’s going to be important to your business is going to involve sharing with outside customer and an outside partner on a global basis. So perimeter security is actually is not even solving the problem of data security anymore because your data is going to move through a number of networks and through a number of partners. So how do you have perimeter security through the applications you’re using and through the software you’re using and through the devices you’re using?
"As a vendor it requires us to completely restructure enabling security."
Levie’s comments come as Dropbox denies a hack that is alleged to have stolen the details of up to 7 million customer accounts.
