Medical startup Figure 1 will launch free app Instagram for Doctors in Europe later this year.
The app allows doctors to share pictures of their patients with the medical community. It is currently available in the UK, North America, Ireland, New Zealand and Australia and has more than 150,000 users.
Healthcare professionals have to sign up to access the app, and get their medical licenses verified.
After the verification, doctors are allowed to upload images and comment on the ones that are uploaded by other physicians.
The Face Block feature blocks the face of the patients, but users have to manually block other sensitive patient identifying features like tattoos and birth mark.
Figure 1 employs privacy moderation team that goes through the photos manually before making them available in the app.
Figure 1 founder Dr Josh Landy said: "We do not possess any personal medical data at all. The best way to keep a secret is not to have it. We are not an organization that delivers healthcare.
"Everything is there for educational purposes. That said, there are very colorful images – things medics see every day. It’s a transparent view into a world you rarely get to see."
The app is a crowdsourced project, and received $6m in investment in 2013.
Research out today from Juniper said the healthcare mobile app market would be worth $3bn globally by 2019.
