Revenues generated by global external disk storage systems dropped by 1.4% during the second quarter of 2014 to $5.9bn, the latest IDC report has revealed.

The firm’s Worldwide Quarterly Disk Storage Systems Tracker found that the overall disk storage systems market reached $7.8bn, which was mainly driven by rising internal storage sales within Asia/Pacific and emerging markets.

IDC Storage research director Eric Sheppard said: "High-end storage sales fell for the fourth consecutive quarter in 2Q14.

"The high-end decline was not as striking as last quarter but it was coupled with a drop in midrange sales, suggesting weak demand is spreading to other parts of the market.

"Bright spots within the global storage market include growth from entry level storage and increased sales within EMEA and Latin America."

During the quarter, the overall disk storage systems capacity reached 11.5 exabytes, which rose 23.9%, while was still comparatively low by historic comparisons.

EMC topped the list of vendors by capturing 30.1% of the overall external disk storage revenue during the quarter, followed by NetApp and IBM with 13.0% and 12.1% respectively.

HP also captured 10.1% market share, followed by Dell and Hitachi finishing the quarter with respective shares of 7.2% and 6.4%.

During Q2, the overall open networked disk storage market declined by 1.2% to $5.1bn in revenue and EMC dominated the market with 32.9% revenue share, while it was less compared to 34.1% generated in 2Q13.

NetApp, IBM and HP trailed EMC with 14.9%, 11.2% and 10.2% respectively.
