Apple has paid about $20.27m to Swiss national rail operator SBB for using its clock design without seeking permission on iPads and iPhone applications.
Featuring a short second hand with a red ball, the clock holds the brand for a 1944 design developed by Zurich-based engineer Hans Hilfiker, and has been still deployed in SBB’s stations.
Earlier, SSB said that it was more interested in bringing clarity to where and how Apple could deploy the logo rather in making money.
Swiss rail operator had appealed Apple in September 2012, after identifying that the new clock application featured in Apple’s new iPad operating system, iOS 6, has imitated the SBB clock design.
Apple has been involved in several lawsuits with rival technology firms, in the midst of claims and counter-claims of infringing patents and designs for smartphones and tablets.
Swiss rail operator has also licensed the design to other companies including the makers of Mondain watches.
