Researchers at Nvidia claim that stacking components from two LCD panels will increase the pixel density of a video display, quadruple the effective resolution.

Called ‘cascaded displays’, the new technique is anticipated to pave the way for the development of cheap, ultra-high-resolution screens intended for consumer-oriented head-mounted displays such as the Oculus Rift.

The chipmaker has already developed a prototype cascaded display device using a 3D printer, which looks similar to the Oculus Rift.

As part of the project, the LCD panels have been taken out from their casings, and the backlight was removed from one panel and, due to a clash in polarisation, a quarter-wave film is placed between the two panels, according to a report in MIT’s Technology Review.

Furthermore, the two panels are positioned with a slight offset, signifying that each pixel on the front display will in fact act as a ‘shutter’ for a bunch of four pixels on the rear panel.

The scientists said that cramming more effective resolution into a HMD will enable the pixels to be spread, offering a broader field of view.
