Amazon Web Services has introduced what it claims to be a fully managed, enterprise storage and sharing service to take on the likes of Dropbox and Google Docs.

Dubbed Zocalo, the service lets customers store, share, and gather feedback on documents, spreadsheets, presentations, webpages, images, PDFs, and tect files.

The service will work with any device, and highlights Amazon’s ongoing push into the mobile space. It’s also available with Amazon Workspace and AWS’ virtual desktops in the cloud.

Noah Eisner, General Manager, Amazon Zocalo at Amazon Web Services, said: "Customers have told us that they’re fed up with the cost, complexity, and performance of their existing old guard enterprise document and collaboration management tools.

"AWS was increasingly being asked to provide an enterprise storage and sharing tool that was easy to use, allowed users to quickly collaborate with others, and met the strict security needs of their organizations. That’s what Amazon Zocalo was built to do."

The announcement could spell disaster for sync and share indies such as Dropbox and Box as Amazon joins other big-hitters like Microsoft and Google to offer the service.

Amazon Web Services has also launched new tools for mobile developers, making it easier for devs to build and deploy mobile apps.

Amazon Cognito is a new service that provides user identity and data synchronization that lets developers create apps that authenticate users through popular public login providers, and then keep app data such as user preferences and game state synced between devices.

"We continue to hear from customers that they prefer to avoid having to build any of the undifferentiated parts of their mobile apps," said Marco Argenti, Vice President, Mobile at Amazon Web Services.

"AWS already provides the backend processing, storage, and databases that customers around the world use to power sophisticated mobile apps. We designed AWS Mobile Services, including Amazon Cognito and AWS Mobile Analytics, to make it even simpler and more cost-effective to build and scale mobile apps on the AWS Cloud."
