Microsoft has reported a revenue of $16.01bn for the fiscal first quarter of 2013 ended 30 September 2012, down 8%, compared to $17.3bn it reported during the same period in 2011.
The quarter results include the deferral of $1.36bn of revenue for Windows upgrade offer, Windows 8 Pre-sales, and Office offer.
For the fiscal first quarter, the company’s net income fell to $4.47bn, or $0.53 per diluted share, compared to $5.74bn, or $0.68 per diluted share, in the year ago period .
Operating income declined to $5.3bn for the quarter, compared to $7.2bn for the same period last year.
The company’s server & tools business revenue increased 8% to $4.55bn for the quarter while the business division’s revenue decreased 2% to $5.5bn.
The Windows & Windows Live division’s revenue declined 33% to $3.24bn for the quarter while the online services division reported revenue grew 9% to $697m.
Microsoft chief executive officer Steve Ballmer said that the launch of Windows 8 is the beginning of a new era.
"Investments we’ve made over a number of years are now coming together to create a future of exceptional devices and services, with tremendous opportunity for our customers, developers, and partners," Ballmer said.
Recently, Microsoft had agreed to acquire StorSimple, a hybrid local and hybrid cloud storage technology for Windows platforms, for an undisclosed amount.
Microsoft said it will launch its much anticipated tablet computer Surface, which is powered by Windows RT operating system, on 26 October 2012 as a competitor to its rival Apple’s iPad.
