UK consumers, particularly Londoners, often carry around uninsured technology that would cost more to replace than their car or motorcycle.

This is the claim set by technology insurer Gadget-cover.com. Whilst the make or model of the hypothetical car was not revealed, a quick sum of the contents on my body means that I could potentially lose the worth of a 1998 3-door Citroën Saxo. MOT’d only until July, mind you.

The firm says that nobody actually knows how many smartphones, iPad-style tablets or laptops are actually covered by insurance for loss, theft or damage.

"Many people can get everything they need on one piece of tech – a smartphone – but others will sometimes carry several pieces of kit: a phone, tablet, laptop, music-player, some kind of GPS or fitness-monitoring gear. To replace all that – even if it’s middle-of-the-range equipment – could well cost £2,000-plus," said Alex Santana of Gadget-Cover.com.

CBR studied the small print of this annoucement and failed to spot any allusion to potential monetary gain by this consumer technology insurer for suggesting people should purchase consumer technology insurance.
