Microsoft has confirmed its plans to launch its much anticipated tablet computer Surface, which is powered by Windows RT operating system, on 26 October 2012 as a competitor to its rival Apple’s iPad.

Unveiled on 18 June 2012, the new tablet, featuring larger screen, built-in stand along with keyboard cover, is open for pre order in the US and will be priced between $499 and $699, same as Apple’s iPad.

According to the firm, range of the new tablet begins at $499 for the 32 GB version, a 32 GB model featuring a black Touch Cover will be priced at $599 and the top 64GB model mated to a black Touch Cover will be available at $699.

Featuring a 10.6-inch widescreen HD display, the new tablet runs Windows RT, which is a version of the Microsoft’s Windows 8 OS developed for the lower-power ARM processors.

The apps incorporated in the tablet include Windows Mail and Windows Messaging, SkyDrive, Windows Internet Explorer 10, Bing, Xbox Music, Xbox Video, and Xbox Games.

Reports reveal that the software giant is planning mass production of Surface during the fourth quarter of 2012, and has orders for about three to five million of its tablets in Asia.
