Smartphones are forever evolving, and this year has been no different. At Mobile World Congress in Barcelona in February, we were introduced to a whole new range of high-end smartphone features like biometric sensors, waterproofing and high-quality cameras.

The reach of the Android platform is also ever-increasing, so here are five of the best upcoming Android-powered smartphones on offer for 2014.

LG G3

We’re looking at a possible July release date for the LG G3, and it’s more than likely going to be LG’s best smartphone yet. A 5.5-inch 2560 x 1440 screen is in the works, with an octa-core processor and a 13MP camera.

Tesco Hudl smartphone

NEWS JUST IN – Tesco CEO Philip Clarke has announced that Tesco will be releasing its very own Android smartphone in 2014 to build on the success of its Hudl tablet.

The smartphone will be preloaded with Tesco services like Tesco Bank and shopping apps.

Rumours from Tesco suggest that the phone specifications will rival those of the Samsung Galaxy S5.

Nexus 6

Google will release its next flagship smartphone, the Nexus 6, in autumn 2014. It should be worth the wait, loaded with expected-to-be-released Android 4.5, a fingerprint sensor, a 5.2-inch display and at least 3GB of RAM.

Galaxy Note 4

Despite the Galaxy S5 and Galaxy K only just been released, Samsung’s next hybrid powerhouse is causing all kinds of excitement. A screen size of more than 5.9 inches is probable, with a 2560 x 1440 resolution. A 16MP camera may also be making an appearance, along with phablet-optimised features like handwriting tools.

OnePlus One

Ever heard of OnePlus? We hadn’t, either, until we caught wind of the OnePlus One. A top-spec device with a low-end price tag, the OnePlus One comes with a 2.5GHz 801 processor, 3GB of RAM, and is cheaper than a Nexus 5. This phone really is a bargain, and it even offers fantastic Android customisation as the device runs the CyanogenMod on top of Android 4.4.2 KitKat.
