A backdoor to the modem of Samsung’s Galaxy range of devices could let hackers to remotely manipulate their personal files and information, a new research revealed.
According to research carried out by team of developers at Replicant, Samsung software that enables communication between the Android OS and the device’s radio modem can be exploited and transforms the device into a snooping tool.
Replicant developer Paul Kocialkowski said that this programme is shipped with the Samsung Galaxy devices and makes it possible for the modem to read, write and delete files on the phone’s storage.
"On several phone models, this program runs with sufficient rights to access and modify the user’s personal data," Kocialkowski said.
Researchers revealed that the devices incorporating modems that use Samsung IPC protocol, Intel XMM6160 and Intel XMM6260 are mostly vulnerable to hackers.
The effected devices include the Galaxy Nexus S, Galaxy S, Galaxy S2, Galaxy Note, Galaxy Nexus, Galaxy Tab 2, Tab 2, and the Galaxy Note 2.
