This week, the World Wide Web turnes 25 years old, and Yahoo and the World Wide Web Foundation have purchased the domain name wwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww.com (that’s 25 Ws) for $2,500 through Sedo, the secondary domain marketplace. The domain is now live and is being used as a platform for a collaboration project between Yahoo and the WWW Foundation to celebreate the web’s birthday.
Tobias Flaitz, CEO of Sedo commented: "So much has happened in the 25 years since the World Wide Web became part of the public conscious – to say that it has changed recent history would be an understatement.
"This domain is pretty special as two of the biggest names in the industry – Marissa Mayer and Sir Tim Berners Lee – are inviting people to celebrate the birthday of the World Wide Web with them. That’s got to be a once in a lifetime opportunity and I’m sure a lot of people will be hoping they are on the guest list."
