Sources close to USA Today have revealed that Samsung will be launching the Galaxy Gear 2.0 smart watch loaded with its own Tizen operating system, rather than Android.
The release will be announced at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona next week, where CBR will be reporting live.
If the rumours are true, we can expect to see a massively upgraded Galaxy Gear smartwatch that could be compatible with more devices than its predecessor, the original Galaxy Gear, which was only compatible with the Galaxy Note 3, Galaxy S4, S4 Mini and SIII.
The Tizen mobile OS, which is an open-source competitor to Android, could run "hundreds of thousands" of Android apps, and give Samsung greater flexibility and revenue possibilities. It also allows Samsung to start the process off reducing its dependance on Google’s Android operating sytem.
Tizen has yet to find its feet amongst its rivals, with a number of deals falling through with OEMs. If a Galaxy Gear 2.0 appears successfully running the OS, it could be the green light Tizen has been waiting for.
