LG has introduced an upgraded version of its large-screen smartphone, G Pro 2, in a bid to take a larger slice in smartphone market.

With the launch, the South Korea-based electronics manufacturer expects to move to the third spot in global smartphone sales from its fourth position.

However, the manufacturer faces danger of falling to fifth position following the latest deal by Lenovo to acquire Google’s Motorola handset division for $2.9bn.

LG Electronics mobile product planning head Andy Kim said, "The Lenovo-Motorola deal has created a great media buzz, but this has not been much talked about within our company."

The revamped smartphone features a 5.9-inch screen, larger than its 5.5 inch predecessor, a one-watt speaker system, and will be running on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor.

The device also allows users to use customised tap patterns to open the locked screen replacing the use of passwords or passcodes.

It features an advanced version of its KnockON feature that was first unveiled last year in the LG G2, Knock Code allows owners to power on and unlock the device by tapping the screens using one of 86,367 "knock" combinations.

Scheduled for launch in Korea in late February, the G Pro 2 will also be available in other Asian markets including China.

In 2013, LG Electronics reported an 81% increase in its global smartphone sales.
