Twitter is struggling to expand its audience base under newly appointed permanent CEO Jack Dorsey as the company posted disappointing user numbers in its third quarter results.

Total average monthly active users (MAUs) were 320 million in Q3, up 11% year-over-year when compared to 316 million in the earlier quarter.

Excluding SMS fast followers, MAUs were 307 million for the quarter, an increase of just 3 million from the previous quarter.

Revenue increased 58% to $569.23m in Q3, compared to $361.26m in the year-ago period.

The company posted a net loss of $132m, or 20 cents per share, compared to $175.4m, or 29 cents per share, for the same period in 2014.

Advertising revenue totaled $513m, an increase of 60% year-over-year. Mobile advertising revenue was 86% of total advertising revenue.

Dorsey said: "We’ve simplified our road map and organisation around a few big bets across Twitter, Periscope and Vine that we believe represent our largest opportunities for growth."

Earlier this month, Twitter said it will slash 336 employees in an attempt to streamline" its operations.
