Millenials have almost entirely lost trust in both government and business to protect their personal information online, a new survey has found.
61% of of 16-35 year olds now say that their level of trust in social media platforms to protect their personal data is "none" or a "little". For retailers this is 38%, for national government it is 22%, and 19% for financial institutions.
The number of those who have "complete" trust is very low, with only 17% completely trusting government, 13% for employers, and just 4% for telecom operators.
The Intercede survey also revealed how Millennials want the organisations they interact with to apply rigorous security to all of the personal data they provide.
A succession of major breaches has been a key factor in this decline in trust. "Millennials are hungry for change," said Lubna Dajani, a communications technology expert and futurist.
"Major data breaches happen every week and millennials, along with the rest of the general public, have found the trust they put in government institutions and businesses to protect their digital identities are being shaken."
