A new survey revealed that DevOps have gained momentum in recent years but it faces data issues and data security related challenges.
The report titled ‘2015 State of DevOps report’ was conducted by Delphix and Gleanster Research to understand the role of DevOps and its evolution.
Around 87% of DevOps leaders and 73% of practitioners said that they have groups dedicated to DevOps initiatives, while 44% of the respondents said that they have dedicated DevOps budgets of $1m or more.
There are issues regarding the definition of DevOps as well, with 75% of respondents claiming that DevOps is strongly or somewhat defined.
Around 84% defined DevOps as developers and system administrators collaborating to ease the transition between development and production, while 69% said that it uses infrastructure automation to provide self-service provisioning of infrastructure by development teams.
Around 42% described DevOps as developers taking full responsibility for all operations tasks, and 35% said that the increasing frequency of deployments to uncover defects earlier in the development lifecycle.
Nearly 46% of DevOps leaders considered data issues as the biggest challenge that was resisting them to use DevOps in testing environments, while 72% of leaders said that developers and quality assurance personnel have access to only non audited production data.

More than 71% of the respondents said that masked data is refreshed from production only once a week or less.
The survey also shed some light on the reasons for starting DevOps initiatives, where 66% of the respondents said that it would help them deliver software in a faster manner, 44% wants to use it to identify bugs, and 43% of the respondents wanted to use it to deliver software more frequently.
Nearly 80% of all respondents said that they were under strong pressure to deliver higher-quality quality software, and 48% of DevOps leaders said that their initiatives helped them identify more defects than earlier in the software development cycle.
