Wal-Mart Stores is trialling a new ‘Scan & Go’ application which would enable shoppers to scan items through their iPhones and then pay at a self-checkout counter to cut down checkout times and retailer costs.

The retailer said, the new app is expected to change the shopping experience and paying habits of the customers making the process more personal and faster.

Earlier, the retailer has also invited employees with Apple iPhones to participate in a test for trialling the new application.

The test follows Walmart decision to add more self-checkout lanes at its Walmart and Sam’s Club stores in a bid to lower costs and prices for its shoppers.

According to Reuters, the retailer’s iPhone app by now comprises functions which include features which allow shoppers generate lists and have a view of items that are in stock.

During the iPhone scanning test, shoppers will be allowed to scan products with their phone and directly pay the cash at a self-checkout counter.

During the test the users will not be allowed to pay on their phone.

The app will transfer the scanned items to the self-checkout kiosk followed by the shoppers completion of transaction through normalself-checkout process.

Walmart’s mobile payment network initiative, allows it to match with similar services offered by Google and eBay among many others.
