Facebook’s new Chief Security Officer, Alex Stamos, has tweeted his desire for a kill date for Adobe’s Flash language.
Tweeting on July 12, Stamos wants to put an end to the security issues arising from legacy websites still using flash, branding an end-of-life date for Flash as the "only way to disentangle the dependencies and upgrade the whole ecosystem at once."
The tweets from Stamos reflect a growing consensus that Flash is nearing the end, mainly due to the fact that HTML5 is now the standard in online video. In January of this year, Google made HTML5 the default on YouTube, replacing the long used Flash.
Famously, Steve Jobs released an open letter detailing the technical flaws and drawbacks of Flash, blocking the technology from the iPad and iPhone.
Stamos joined Facebook as CSO following an announcement on his Facebook page on June 24. In his announcement he praised Facebook’s ‘history of innovation’, as well as mentioning previous employer Yahoo and the ‘wonderful time’ he had in his tenure there.
