Global hard disk drive (HDD) shipments increased 8% during the second quarter of 2012, with 157 million units being shipped compared 145.1 million in the first quarter, according to a report by IHS.

According to IHS iSuppli Storage Space Market Brief, Western Digital was the leading vendor with 45% share of the shipments, followed by Seagate with 42% and Toshiba with 13%.

Total HDD revenue during the quarter reached $10.3bn, compared to $9.6bn recorded during the first quarter.

During the quarter, Western Digital produced approximately 71 million units, 10.1% more than 63.8 million units it produced during Q1.

The production included the units produced by Hitachi GST, a company acquired by Western Digital earlier in the year while its recorded reached $4.8bn during the quarter.

Seagate on the other hand shipped 65.9 million units during the quarter, 7.9% increase over the 60.7 million units shipped during Q1.

IHS storage systems analyst Fang Zhang said Western Digital lost its No. 1 unit shipment ranking to Seagate in the fourth quarter of 2012 after flooding in Thailand damaged its HDD manufacturing facility.

"The company now has fully recovered from the disaster, allowing it to sharply increase shipments of HDDs for notebook PCs, up 28% from the first quarter. Western Digital is on track to retain the top spot in shipments and revenue for the third quarter," Zhang said.

Japan based Toshiba remained at the third spot shipping 20.1 million HDD units during the quarter, though it shipped 2.4% less compared to 20.6 million units in Q1.

Toshiba recorded revenue of approximately $1.1bn in the second quarter.
