Sony has thrown its hat into Windows 8 tablet arena by releasing VAIO Duo 11, which can double up as an Ultrabook and tablet.
With the new release, Sony takes an aim at Microsoft’s upcoming Surface tablet PC.
With the Surf Slider design VAIO Duo 11 can switch between keyboard and tablet modes, allowing it to be used as tablet during travel and used as a full featured PC in office.
Weighing about 1.3kg the device sports an 11.6-inch HD 1920×1080 touch screen with Intel Core i3-3217U, i5-3317U or i7-3517U processors.
The VAIO Duo 11 will be configurable to 4GB or 8GB of RAM, and a 128GB or 256GB SSD.
It also has an HD camera in the front and back, Near Field Communication support, GPS, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Ethernet, USB 3.0, VGA and HDMI-out, a memory card reader, stereo speakers and a rotation lock button.
Amidst its plan to slash 15% of its workforce which is about 1,000 employees by 2014, the company has also released an entertainment centric touch PC called VAIO Tap 20.
It has a 1600×900 screen with 10-point capacitive multitouch and can be configured with Intel Core i3-3217U, i5-3317U or i7-3517U processors, from 750GB to 1TB 5400rpm HDD, and 4GB or 8GB of RAM.
The 50.8 cm is a 10-point multi-touch screen powered by Mobile BRAVIA Engine 2 offers enhanced screen experience to users.
It will come with an in-built stand to tilt the VAIO Tap 20 to a comfortable angle while it can be put in an upright angle to use it as a fully-functioning desktop PC.
Both VAIO Duo 11 and VAIO Tap20 run on Windows 8 operating system and will be available form the end of October 2012.
