Be on the lookout for thieves! Apple Watch vulnerable to theft

Lack of Activation Lock feature makes it easy for thieves.

By CBR Staff Writer

The Apple watch is reportedly vulnerable to theft, as thieves can reset the device and easily pair it with their own iPhones.

The vulnerability is due to the lack of an Activation Lock feature, which was introduced with iOS7 to prevent theft of iPhones.

Activation Lock prevents the device from being re-activated without disabling ‘Find My iPhone’ feature first. In order to disable ‘Find My iPhone’ feature, users need to confirm their username and password used to enable the feature in the first place.

However, with Activation Lock absent from Apple Watch, anyone can easily reset the device by bypassing the passcode and log in through a different iCloud account.

The watch, which can cost up to $17,000 does have features to protect data but the lack of Activation Lock has raised serious concern amongst users.

The device is only compatible with an iPhone presently, and it requires Apple user account and internet access to get activated.

Several brands came up with their own smart watches, and most of them do not feature theft protection beyond lock screens.
